InverseSOLVER – For estimating boundary heat flux in thermal processes

The ‘estimation’ of the surface conditions with the knowledge of temperature history at critical locations inside the body falls under the category of Inverse Heat Conduction Problems (IHCP).

InverseSOLVER is based on a serial algorithm for the IHCP for estimating the time and space varying multiple heat flux components at the unknown boundary. In many practical problems the surface conditions are not known a-priory. In such cases the surface conditions will have to be ‘estimated’ under simulated or laboratory conditions.

Many fields of applications where such techniques will be useful may be cited, e.g., casting, welding, heat treatment, polymer processing etc.,

Applications

InverseSOLVER has been applied successfully for estimating the boundary heat flux in many practical engineering applications as:

  • Space and time varying multiple heat flux components (32 components at four sections along the mold wall)
at the metal-mold interface during net shape casting of continuous casting of steel, for a consortium of steel companies
  • Space and time varying multiple heat flux components (six components along the mold wall) at the metal-mold
interface during continuous casting of thin steel slabs
  • Space and time varying multiple heat flux components at the metal-mold interface during mold filling in aluminum die casting
  • Metal-mold interface heat flux during die casting of cast iron in cast iron molds for a leading foundry
  • Heat flux due to the welding arc during TIG welding
  • Heat flux during quenching of steel specimens
  • Heat flux at the metal-mold interface corners of solidifying aluminum bars and slabs
  • Heat flux on the plasma facing components in the Tokomak.
  • Heat flux on the heat shields during re-entry of space vehicles for the Indian Space Research

InverseSOLVER - IHCP Formulation and Solution

A major application of InverseSOLVER is in the estimation of heat flux due to boiling (two-phase heat transfer) as in quenching of steel. InverseSOLVER combines IHCP and austenite decomposition models also accounting for the latent heat during phase transformation.
